Can this little black box change your life?
I have been working with brain problems for almost five decades. The first 30 years of that were spent helping diagnose neurological diseases, doing brain research, and inventing and developing medical devises. About twenty years ago, I was attending a scientific biofeedback meeting and noticed a workshop about EEG biofeedback (brain wave training) using the Quantitative Electroencephalography (computerized analysis of the brain wave patterning). QEEG, as it is now commonly called, was new in those days so this joining of two technologies struck me as a potential breakthrough. Such an innovative combination, I thought, would allow advanced research in active but highly specialized field of research. EEG biofeedback equipment in those days was usually designed and built in a university electronics laboratory for a tightly defined research project. The computer, on the other hand, would allow flexibility that could lead to possible solutions for a variety of brain problems. This possibility fit perfectly into my background of clinical and research EEG (brainwave analysis), so off I went to the workshop. I was not disappointed. One of the main reasons I got so excited was because, frankly, there wasn't much that could be done for those suffering from neurological problems in those days. Drugs worked poorly or not at all, and, as today, nasty side effects were common. I began my research with gusto. The beginning proved to be challenging, but what became immediately obvious was the brain could learn to change, to remediate areas of dysfunction, and to function more normally. Because performance, mood, memory, behavior and emotional resilience are all created by brain dysfunction, this was truly a dramatic finding. With the discovery that the brain could improve its function, the next challenge was to learn how to "talk" to the brain to efficiently teach it to correct the dysfunctions that were creating the problem. This project kept me busy and excited for many years. Long story short, the challenge was met and the lives of many children and adults have been changed. My work, along with that of other therapists doing Neurofeedback training, has touched the lives of at least 100,000 people around the world. As it has evolved, NeuroMatrix Neural Efficiency Training™ currently incorporates four types of neurological training: Neurofeedback (brain wave training), Audio-Visual Entrainment (described below), transcranial DC Stimulation (a device that puts a gentle current over the scalp to modulate ("normalize") brain function), and Heart Rate Variability (breathing) training. For those interested, details of this process can be found at www.greatbrain.com. The "problem" with NeuroMatrix Neural Efficiency Training™ While we have people come from all over the country, NeuroMatrix Neural Efficiency Training is not possible for some. For those that don't live in the area, taking a couple of weeks off work or school is difficult, and, with the travel and hotel expenses, it might not be in the budget. The question became, is there a way to take the benefits of the training to those that are not able to come to our Training Center in Texas? Reviewing the statistics of the Quantitative EEG baseline analysis we do before each session to measure progress, the Audio-Visual Entrainment algorithms (computer programs) I developed showed consistently strong improvements and benefits in helping the brain heal and optimize its performance. This, combined with the proven calming effect of the breathing training, opened the door to a very special and unique at-home training that I call the Pegasus Mental Fitness Program™. |
