Learning Disabilities are heart breaking for all concerned - a child's self esteem is sacrificed; parents are emotionally pained and physically drained; teachers are perplexed and frustrated.

As incredible as it might sound, especially considering the profound emotional, physical, and mental impact, specific Learning Disabilities are usually not all that complicated brain-wise. With rare exception, the learning issue is being created by a localized brain dysfunction in an otherwise normal or even high functioning brain. The brain energy of Learning Disabilities

The Quantitative EEG in those with learning issues such as dyslexia (reading problems) and dyscalculia (major problems with math) reveal specific problem areas in the brain. While the location is easily identified, there can be differences in the brain wave patterning at those sites. These patterns typically fall into one or more of the following categories:

Focal slow waves or spikes

Focal slow waves, being the EEG (brain wave) signature of localized brain damage or dysfunction, literally point to the "root cause" of the learning difficulty. In those with dyslexia, for example, slow brain wave activity may be found in one or more of these key performance areas:

  • The occipital lobes, at the back of the brain, where incoming visual information is received and processed;

  • Wernicke's area, just above and behind the left ear, is where the brain processes words for understanding;

  • Broca's area, in the left front of the brain, is responsible for comprehension and putting words together for expression (language production);

  • The Sensory Motor area (Central Sulcus), where speech is put into motion for verbalization of thoughts.
